What is Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is caused by damages to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is what is sends messages to and from the spinal cord and brain, to the rest of the body. When the PNS suffers damage, it sends mixed signals to the central nervous system, causing the painful symptoms of neuropathy and disorientating your body - making balancing and walking difficult.
There are over 100 different causes of neuropathy including:
- Diabetes
- Chemotherapy & Radiation
- Trauma Induced
- Post - surgical
- Medications
- Poor Nutrition
- and so much more...
How to prevent neuropathy
Given the hundreds of ways you could get neuropathy, preventing neuropathy is not always possible. There are however, lifestyle changes you can make to improve your odds.
Reduce inflammation
Chronic inflammation is at the root of all diseases, including neuropathy. Inflammation occurs when your body fights off bacteria or viruses. In a disease like neuropathy, your immune system triggers inflammation when there are no viruses or bacterias to fight off. This causes your immune system to act as if regular tissues are infected or somehow unusual, causing damage.
Start reducing your inflammation by:
- Stop smoking
- Reduce alcoholic beverage intake
- Avoid consuming inflammatory foods
- Manage your stress levels
Get regular exercise
Exercising when you suffer from neuropathy can be challenging, in fact the most dangerous side effect of neuropathy is difficulty walking and balancing.
Regardless, regular exercise is essential to preventing neuropathy and to improving your overall quality of life. Check out this guide to see different exercises you can do, at any stage of mobility.
