Neuropathy Symptoms can come from several different root causes, and that can play a role in how you should treat your relief plan.
Two common causes of neuropathy pain come from common cancer treatments – chemotherapy and radiation – but because oncology doctors are focused first and foremost on treating the cancer, the neuropathy can easily go ignored.
Think of it this way: An oncologist (cancer specialist) is hyper-focused on tests and scans that indicate the amount of cancer in a patient. They prescribe chemotherapy and/or radiation to kill cancer cells and “cure” the patient. They look at scans to determine “progress” and if the cancer is reduced or at least stops spreading, that’s the measurement of success – to the oncologist.
Thank God you have options for treating your cancer, but at what cost to the rest of your health?
Radiation and chemotherapy are aggressive treatments designed to kill cancer cells – so of course they often have miserable side effects. After all, these aggressive treatments are extremely harsh to your body – they are designed to kill cells, so of course they can create damage to your healthy cells as much as to the cancer cells.
I want to be clear: I’m not an oncologist and I don’t specialize in treating cancer. Nor am I saying not to get chemo or radiation. I do specialize, however, in helping people reverse neuropathy symptoms.
I see many cases of people who develop neuropathy from chemo or radiation, and I give them the tools to help them heal their body.
Cancer can be aggressive and horrific; it’s one of the harshest afflictions known to humans. If a cancer specialist prescribes chemotherapy and radiation to save your life, they are prescribing direct damage to your body that will hopefully get rid of the cancer. In many cases, that’s considered damage that does good and it’s the course worth taking.
Here’s what you need to know: many cancer specialists won’t have answers on helping the symptoms that can result from such harsh treatments, and you shouldn’t have to wait until you are cancer free to treat your neuropathy.
If you or someone close to you has battled or is currently battling cancer and have neuropathy as a result of cancer treatment, you know how frustrating it is to know that the very treatment plan meant to cure you is also causing side effects you think you can’t control.
We hear all the time that patients were told the effects of neuropathy that resulted from treating cancer would go away in six months to a year, yet nothing has changed more than a year after they’ve finished treatment.
In fact, often the pain and numbness has become worse, and the only “treatment” they’ve been offered has been more prescription pain medications that have little to no effect in the short term and absolutely no effect in the long run.
It’s almost second nature for modern doctors to prescribe endless drugs for just about any ailment. The problem is that drugs usually mask symptoms, rather than curing or reversing them. Drugs also have the potential for interactions that can ultimately do more harm than good.
Your body is more than the sum of its parts; it’s a miraculous machine with millions of components that work together to function. That’s why looking at your health holistically helps identify key areas that may be holding back optimal well-being in other areas.
If you’re undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, you can still focus on holistic healing without interference to your treatments. In fact, increasing your overall wellness is good for any and every healing journey.
